Last One Standing

Last One Standing is a story between two men who grew up together, sworned as brothers. But when one of them backstabbed the other, their brotherhood was forced to take on a different definition. Ten years down the road, both men are out to fight one another and only one of them can stand. There can only be one winner. Only one. But how far would they go to be the one and only one?

I've always been a TVB fan; not a crazy 24-7 fan chasing every drama without missing a single one, rather I've been enjoying most of the Chinese dramas from TVB as the stories always reminds me of how beautiful life can be. However, when I came across the poster for Last One Standing, I had my doubts. Because the poster sent across a dark message of an even darker battle between two souls - which is exactly what this drama turns out to be after I watched through all 22 episodes on my laptop. Last One Standing has gotta be one of the darkest TVB drama I have ever watched. The dark tension and weight can be felt throughout the entire drama, which makes this a very good one to watch. I compliment the director for taking up such an approach to the story. It makes is believable and realistic.

The most fascinating element, however, lies in its characters. Last One Standing has very well crafted characters that presented the story perfectly. For example, the character of Tong Lap Yin (starred by Roger Kwok). I've always watched Roger playing funny roles, good-person roles, nerdy roles - this is probably the first time I've seen him putting on a serious evil front on the screen and it's unbelievable. He pulled it off so well, you will find yourself liking and hating him so much as this character.

Another good example is the character Cheung Sing Hei (starred by Kevin Cheng). His role in this drama series differs lots from the usual ones he takes on. He plays the ex-convict who was in jail for ten years for a crime he didn't commit. Because of this, he burns with revenge and finds all sort of ways to prove his innocence. The way he portrays anger, hurt, jealousy and love is so intriguing. I love him in this character. Other good characters to look out for includes Tong Lee So-Ngoh (starred by Lai Suen), Kelly (starred by Macy Chan), Fiona (starred by Fiona Yuen) and Poon Chi Kan (starred by Evergreen Mak).

The most interesting love story takes place between Fiona and Poon Chi Kan. They play the typical couple of two hears becoming as one despite the challenges life throws at them. The simple things they do to show they love one another will simply plaster a smile across your face. Additional to that, you won't be able to suppress your laughters when old grandma Tong Lee So-Ngoh takes over the screen. She is witty, cheeky and funny. She will surprise you by doing things that you never thought an old lady would do just to protect her family.

Last One Standing is a good mixture of good and evil (more of the latter). It keeps you at the edge of your couch as you drown in suspense at the end of each episode. You'll find yourself nibbling the edge of your nails in anxiousness, or simply holding your tummy in choking laughters. You'll be surprised at each scene because (chances are) the story does not unfold the way you have imagined it to be.

Do not fight the battle, just pick up this drama. It's definitely worth watching. I highly recommend it to all TVB lovers out there.

P/s: Don't stand watching!
