Anyone But Him
Book Title: Anyone But Him
Author: Sheila O'Flanagan
Amount of Pages: 600
The writer begins with a series of captivating chapters that defines the personality of each main character: Andie, Jin and Cora. She puts the background of them nicely into place in the first few chapters and gradually turns the focus to the storyline in the chapters that follow. Though the introduction chapters are captivating, they are also a bit draggy because 90% of the focus is on drawing out the characters in the mind of the readers. The story only really begins much later when Cora comes back from the cruise holiday.
In terms of characters, I'll give credit to the writer for a good job done. Each character is well crafted to reflect a strong personality of her own. Andie is somewhat having trouble facing her life after parting ways with her ex-boyfriend. She ends up having an affair with a married man, thinking that it would only be a fling but she clings on longer than that. Jin, on the other hand, is 99% convinced that her husband is the best thing that has ever happened to her. He could give her everything she wants - clothes, cars, houses and even good sex - but he could not give her the desire of her heart. Perhaps he isn't the perfect husband afterall. And next comes Cora, their mother, whom has lost her husband due to an illness. She is dwelling in grief when she met Jack on the cruise and both of them hit it off immediately. The problem; not only is Jack the Hollywood superstar handsome hunk, he is also 20 years younger than her. When Cora comes home from the cruise holiday with Jack, the sisters find themselves in need to team up to get rid of him... fast.
As predictable as the story may seem, Anyone But Him has a lot of surprises in store for its readers. The plot has a twist in it, leaving readers with a I-didn't-see-that-coming thought as the scenes are revealed one by one. While I find the story a little draggy through the pages, it doesn't bore me to death because there are suspense in every chapter. It makes me want to read more and more, yet at the same time the suspense in every mini scene seems to make the story a little too lengthy to be of my liking.
I like the way the writer brings out the story, the detail in every character and how each scene is crafted in its settings. However, it could have been done better without some of the unnecessary scenes, which seemed to be there for the sake of being there. Overall, Anyone But Him is a good book to read. It's deep and personal, highlighting three different female individuals whom I believe anyone can relate to one of them somehow. If you are a female and you think you are alone in your journey in life, this is the book for you. Let Sheila O'Flanagan assure you that you are never alone in this journey called life.
