Protege

Guess who robbed Daniel Wu of his limelight in this movie? Yes, you got it right! Andy Lau did it again. Whether he plays the antagonist or protagonist, he always gets the limelight because he is such a good actor. In Protege, we see yet another part of him which make us nod our heads in awe.

Druglord Quin (starred by Andy Lau) is one of the best traders in Asia distribution heroin to various countries without being traced. He is efficient, compatible and absolutely careful about his operation... until Nick (starred by Daniel Wu) came alone. Eight long years of having this guy following him around and getting things done, Quin thought that perhaps it is time to let Nick take over his business. Especially now when he is diagnosed with cancer. And so he begins to teach Nick the business, covering from the source right to the market.

Throw into the plot to make it a greater story is a junkie mother character that lives next to Nick. Starring Zhang Jing Chu, Fan is a single parent who struggles to bring up her daughter. Nick sees her struggle and tries to help her out only to find out that she is a drug addict. Raged, he decides to ignore them but in vain. One day, he finds her dead body at home and terror sips into his soul... Would he continue to be the undercover he has been for eight whole years? Or would he be loyal to Quin and run the business to be a rich man?

Ah yes, Protege is another police-goes-undercover type of story. But this is one really well done masterpiece. Because it would open your eyes to the real world of drug trafficking and it would be something that you have not imagined it to be.
