Rules of Dating
Seriously, the poster is so vibrant but the movie was not. Then again, I am not disappointed with the storyline. I thought it was a very well written masterpiece. Nope, I am not talking about the uncensored scene. I am talking about the deep dialogue that drives the story.
Rules of Dating is the directorial debut of South Korean director Han Jae-rim. In terms of graphic and cinemagraphy, the story took on a homely familar feel as it explores settings such as home, school, work place and even bus. Everything feels so every day that allows the audience to just focus on the main subject. And the main subject is security in love.
The story begins with a high school teacher named Lee Yoo-rim. He is teamed up with a trainer teacher named Choi Hong who is one year older than him. In Korea, it is a taboo for guys to go after older women but that is exactly what Lee did. He has his eyes all over her from the time they first met.
Since he doesn't believe in love, he asks her straight out to sleep with him so that he can make love to her. It doesn't matter that he has a girlfriend and she is engaged to a man, he just wants to have all of her and he is not giving up. He persuades her, convinces her, seduces her and even forces himself into her but his actions do not pay off. She continues to ignore him right until...
One day, Lee gets really upset because of Choi's ignorance, he decides to play the same card. When Lee starts to ignore Choi, she begins to realize that maybe (just maybe) she really wants to feel all of him too.
And so, of course, they slept with one another. But that is not the core of the story here. It's the elements that are embedded in the characters which make this story beautiful. Each of us has different background but our needs are the same. We all need love.
