Somewhere In Between
Book Title: Somewhere In Between
Author: Ruth Gilligan
Amount of Pages: 427
The first book I read written by Ruth Gilligan was Forget which turned out to be one of my favourite of all time. Thus when I came across this book, Somewhere In Between, at the bookstore, I did not hesitate to purchase it because I assumed that it would either be as good as Forget or perhaps even better. But I was wrong. Somewhere In Between is a hard book to read because it reads better as a screenplay script than a novel.
Somewhere In Between is a summer story about two different individual living under the same roof leading two very separate life. Though their paths often cross one another because their friends are a close gang, each story is told separately - a stand alone of its own. Their names: Chloe and Alex.
Chloe and Alex are twins but nothing about them reflect the connection between both siblings. Chloe is the popular girl who is smart and independent. Alex is the star in his gang of friends who couldn't care less about his studies. Her life is about making it great so that she can study Drama after graduation while his life is all about screwing up as much girls as possible and getting drunk. The story truly began when Alex was involved in an accident and his best buddy died while Chloe started dieting to lose weight thinking her boyfriend would love her more for being thin.
Ruth Gilligan has taken a different approach for this book. She has implemented a different writing style. Unlike Forget, which would get you all emotional reading because you can picture every detail of the story, Somewhere In Between is really a screenplay that is worth considering making the wide screen. It's short, not descriptive, dialogue-driven and definitely lots of short scenes everywhere. As a reader, imagining the story was hard. But I supposed it would be grand as a screenplay.
Just don't ask me to read it again, please!
