Empress Orchid
Book Title: Empress Orchid
Author: Anchee Min
Amount of pages: 370
I first picked it up when I was laying in bed tired from a long day agenda. Read a chapter of it and didn’t quite understand, so I closed the book and placed it aside – thinking I’ll never touch it unless it’s the last book on earth. But something motivated me to give it another try – the book was a gift from a special friend.
Honestly, this genre is not my favourite at all. I always define this kind of books as heavy reading which is written to absorb every ounce of energy from my tiny brain. Comprehension, most of the time, is tough on books like this. Anyhow, I gave it another try a week later and got hooked to it until I read the last page.
I am a big fan for Chinese drama. I just love the tension and suspense of drama series that keep me at the edge of my seat. Surprisingly, I find the writing style of this book really captivating – almost as if I am the main character living a crazy life by the Emperor’s side.
This book is about how an ordinary girl became a concubine to the Emperor, and later she became one of his favourites. Being the only one who gave birth to a son in the palace, Orchid was given the title Empress by His Majesty – and that’s when the war began. Every concubine wanted her to be dead.
Every time I have to put the book aside to do other things, I would think of the plot of the story as one that is alike those I watch on TV and it just keeps tempting me to continue reading till 4 am each day, for three days in a row. Guess, that explains my black panda eyes at work.
Definitely a highly recommended book from me to you simply because of one reason – if I hate this type of books but this one keeps me till the very end, can you imagine how exciting reading it must be?
